Drake Bay

April 10, 2021

A recent trip to Drake Bay highlights so much of what I've come to know about Costa Rica.

Travel Times

The roads are awful.  This trip is similar distance as KC-to-STL, which takes 4hrs to drive 200 miles.  But here, traveling that distance was more like 8hrs.  There is a reason why charter air is so popular.  The roads suck.  And without a 4wd, there is no way you cross the rivers and traverse the gravel roads.  These roads are hard on your car and your body!

Natural Beauty

Once in Drake Bay, we are definitely off the beaten path and deep into nature.  The pristine rainforest is something to cherish.  There are animals and beaches and sunsets and big sky all around you.  I love it.

Corcovado National Park

The primary reason to visit Drake Bay is to go on a guided nature walk in Corcovado National Park.  But this excursion isn't for the faint of heart.  We were up at 5am, on a one-hour boat ride at 6am, and then on a five-hour walk.  All without much food.  This is just too much for most people to enjoy.  We did see lots of animals, and the forest was beautiful, but it isn't anywhere near as accessible as the US national park system.

Copa De Arbol

We stayed two nights in this beautiful property with ten cabinas.  The food was delicious, and the pool was an enjoyable way to experience sunset.  Each day I went for a swim in the ocean, and we even took a horseback ride along the beach.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to see so much of Costa Rica.  I remember talking with Caleb back in November about how I might want to spend my time seeing different parts of the country.  Now that I've been here four months, I can definitely say that I wouldn't have gotten a good feel of this country if it wasn't for Alex.
